Bandung-based freelance photographer Kelvin Fadillah Wahyu recently tried our Lomo LC-A along with our Lomography Color Negative ISO 400 and LomoChrome Purple Pétillant 35 mm ISO 100–400 film for two creative photo shoots. Let's check out Kelvin's photos and find out what he thought of this unique camera and film combination.

Kelvin

Hi, Kelvin! It’s great to have you here at Lomography! Please tell us a bit about yourself.

Hi all, I am Kelvin. I work as a freelance photographer in Bandung. Most of my clients are food and beverage holding groups and sometimes I work with still and behind-the-scenes teams in film production. Sometimes I do some jobs such as digital marketing, and branding stuff in film production. I am really interested in outdoor activities such as running and trekking and I always grab my camera to capture some silly moments of my friends and the scenery around them. I also love to explore some coffee shops and restaurants. I found photography when I was in senior high school. There was one movie that interested me at that time to become a photographer called The Secret Life of Walter Mitty.

How do you describe your style of photography? Do you have any film photographers that you look up to?

My photography style is inspired by some Asian Movies, especially from Japan and Hong Kong, that gives a warm and calm color tone, and are mysterious, with neon lights and shaky and blurred style – pictures such as Chungking Express and Drive My Car. I am interested in portraits and fashion, and it helps me to understand the beauty of women and express the other personas they have from their face and gestures. I do like street photography and sometimes I create some story structure and combine street and portraits to look like cinema. There are several film photographers that I really admire such as Hamada Hideaki and Peter Lindbergh. They have a strong character in their photos and can direct the model fluently and give a sensational mood.

What is a typical week like for you?

Just like an ordinary freelancer. Currently I am transferring from my Art Diploma Degree to film production studies at the Institute of Art Jakarta. On the weekdays I am busy with the production team and sometimes handle clients. At the weekend I usually go running around the city with my friends, coffee hoping to find the best beans in town and also finding unique street food.

How did you like shooting with the Lomo LC-A? What did you like most about it?

The Lomo LC-A has a compact simple design and it is really handy. It has a cool black color and it is easy to use with a rangefinder system and auto for depth of field. It helps me to combine the street style and the portraits.

Can you tell us about what you decided to shoot with the Lomo LC-A? What do you think about the results?

I decided on two ideas for the photo sessions. First I shoot it with my friend Vanesa who works as a model, and for the second film I created some documentary street style with one of the indie bands called White Chorus at their studio. The result is really unique. I had to adapt to change focus with the zone focus system. It gives a sense of realism and funky pictures. The Lomo LC-A gives me another perspective.

You also used the Lomography Color Negative ISO 400 film. What did you think of this film?

This film perfectly matches the mood of Bandung in the morning. It gives a yellow and blue color that looks like a Japanese mood that combines with a minimalist setting.

Do you have a favorite photo from those you took with this camera?

I like several pictures in this series, especially Vanesa posing in front of the minimalist house. It gives me a sense of calm and freshness of Bandung City and the cute houses, and gives an extra persona to the model. It also reminds me of a scene in a film that was directed by Hirokazu Koreeda, one of my favorite directors.

What do you think is the perfect situation for shooting this camera?

It really matches crowded moments and street areas. It also really fits for someone who likes experimental and fine art photography when used with several Lomography films that have a unique style.

What do you like most about the LomoChrome Purple 35 mm ISO 100–400 film ?

It gives a nostalgic, funky and naughty mood to the pictures as a whole. I used LomoChrome Purple to shoot documentary style photos of a band, that shows the creation of their songs and studio sessions. LomoChrome Purple gives a vintage look to the band's session and looks edgy and cool. This film really can describe the characteristic of their songs that have a sense of electronic rock.

It was really fun. I did some experimental angles for the pictures that I took. It was tricky, especially when I shot the LomoChrome Purple indoors. I used the direct light from the window to give extra highlights to the faces and make the right exposure.

What is one thing you have been dying to explore further in your photography (anything from a place to a particular subject) What is your dream project?

I really want to work in several fashion magazines such as Vogue and Bazaar, or work as a still photographer in blockbuster film projects and work with some of my favorite directors in Hollywood or Asian region film industries, and use film as a medium to explore.

What kind of current projects you are working on?

Recently I have been planning to create a short indie movie project for my final semester exam. It gives me another challenge as a creative worker, to handle the management stuff in film production activities.

What’s coming up next for you? What’s in the works and what’s on your mind?

I am still looking forward to taking another portraits project and learning studio lighting to expand my knowledge and skill. I also have a plan to compile all of my photographs and create my second photo book. I hope I can make my own personal exhibition in the future.
